May Making in the Clubhouse
So far May has been a “month of making” in the Clubhouse. The Universal Design Workshops continue with some innovative and creative projects. Manny, Eric, Santa, and Hughey are fully fleshing out their projects that are centered around making games for youth that have difficulty seeing. Project range from games with the Makey-Makey using sound recognition, to texturized rubik’s cubes, to games that deal with figuring out the scents of food.
Our two wonderful Fenway Highschool interns have been working hard creating a stop animation about recycling, experimenting with bread boards, and using LED lights to create bookmarks. This is their last week at the Clubhouse and we are sad to see them go! Be sure to check out their tutorials on the village if you are interested in learning new technology.
This past week we had several visits from cool organizations. Science Club for Girls stopped by and participated in the Clubhouse Astronomy Poetry Workshop led by Clubhouse volunteer Muazezz. Muazezz showed Science Club for Girls the Astronomy Picture of the Day which can be found at apod.nasa.gov/apod. She also shared her knowledge about the universe which inspired the girls to create paintings, poems, and drawings of the universe. These will soon be showcased and hung up on our wall at the clubhouse!
Don’t forget that Friday May 31 from 4-5 pm we will visit the Operation/Control Center for Chandra X-ray Observatory – NASA’s flagship X-ray telescope, a very cool space telescope, but controlled at a place near MIT. Learn more here: chandra.harvard.edu. We will leave the Clubhouse at 3:15 p.m.
On Thursday the Clubhouse had a visit from the Theatre Offensive, an organization that presents the diverse realities of queer lives in art to break through personal isolation and political orthodoxy to help build an honest, progressive community. A group of youth ages 16-22 gave a personal and meaningful presentation for Clubhouse youth. In exchange Clubhouse Members Manny and Smi-ILL showcased their music and video work. Check out below our upcoming C2C field trips.
